He'll always be either scorned as irrelevant for reliving endlessly his old glories, or else dismissed as someone who somehow forgot his roots if he doesn't play all the hits. I remember seeing Neil Young back in the Re.ac.tor days (that was his best album, you know), and all the people who showed up were waiting patiently for "Sugar Mountain", all the people who might have enjoyed the show stayed away in droves, no doubt fearing "Sugar Mountain".

Anywhat, this is supposed to be all about the Bowie, right? Those truly committed to spelunking down into the deepest caves of noninspiration that the Eighties Bowie fearlessly explored would do well to take a minute to sit and pensively consider the example of the ghastfully ill-advised Tin Machine project, in which Bowie (and several of the blind fish he befriended down in the caves) proved that, yes, it is possible for Bowie to create a record that just plain blows.

Fortunately, Bowie has remembered that he was- at one time- cool, and after appearing in a series of adverts in glossy magazines (what was he selling anyway? I fergit!) has staked a claim again on his own 40 acres of coolness.

Word up on the "Scary Monsters". With Hallowe'en coming up, if I were of lesser character I'd advise everybody to give a listen to Superchunk's cover of "Scary Monsters (and Super Freaks)". Which in itself, tells you all you need to know about Bowie. If Superchunk covers you, you're fucking COOL.

Hell, they covered Motorhead.

And Lemme is bad-ass.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5777603.post-1159395818305870152006-09-27T17:23:00.000-05:002006-09-27T17:23:00.000-05:00>Ooh, that's more work than I can handle! Although who knows, it might be fun...my Bowie collection is pretty complete (and it would motivate me to fill in the gaps).

Ohhhh you know you want to. Even if you just did a sort of sampling of certain phases in his career rather than all...

Hell, I'd be pleased with anything. I only have two of his albums (Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust) and I'd be willing to try some more if I could just decide where to go next.

BUT of course it IS a lot of work. I was just mentioning that if you DID...somehow...decide to do it...y'know...there'd be someone out there to enjoy it...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5777603.post-1159321720180001282006-09-26T20:48:00.000-05:002006-09-26T20:48:00.000-05:00Phil - Ooh, that's more work than I can handle! Although who knows, it might be fun...my Bowie collection is pretty complete (and it would motivate me to fill in the gaps).

Jon - Just a picky point: the three albums I draw from here I would not characterize as dismal. Really the only album of his I'd so characterize would be Never Let Me Down...and even that has a couple of good songs. I think: I can't remember them. (Of course, I like Iggy's late '70s/early '80s output pretty well...it's his more recent stuff that seems to me to have lost the trail, at least what I've heard of it.)2fshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17813487704459856169noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5777603.post-1159307002864370252006-09-26T16:43:00.000-05:002006-09-26T16:43:00.000-05:00Y'know...a sort of period-by-period sampling of Bo...Y'know...a sort of period-by-period sampling of Bowie (like you did with Cat Stevens) would be lapped up gratefully by at least...erm...one of us.

(Package arrived safely this afternoon. I have a pet theory that Bowie covered so many Iggy songs during these years as a favor to boost Iggy's income. To be fair, Bowie co-wrote many of them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
